1345 Grigia-Griccioli

Le Origini

Grigio da Barberino di Val d'Elsa, the forefather of the Griccioli family, was born in 1345. His descendants and family members served in the highest offices of the Florence Republic since XIV century and they moved to Siena in 1720. Stefano di Grigio and Orlando di Stefano di Grigio became Priores of the Florence Lordship.

Today the Griccioli's estates are located today near Siena: Montechiaro, Monteriggioni and Castiglion Ghinibaldi.
Situated on the site of a medieval hamlet, the Montechiaro estate has an 18th century villa at its centre.Just 10km from Siena, the villa is blessed with an enchanting view of the nearby cityscape. It lies on 160 Ha of land, 10 of which are vineyards with 2000 surrounding olive trees.
Monteriggioni was bought by the Griccioli family in 1720. Today the family owns only the main palace, part of which now houses the Montechiaro wine shop.

Castiglion Ghinibaldi, today known as Castiglion Alto, was an important site along the Via Francigena pilgrims’ route. Castiglion is the most distinguished property of the Griccioli family, where four hectares of vineyards are planted for wine making at the Montechiaro cellar. Since 2005 the company has been managed directly by Alessandro Griccioli, Sommelier & Official Taster AIS (Italian sommelier Association), who took the reins following his completion of the prestigious MBA in Wine Marketing & Management iNSEEC Bordeaux. Recognising the potential of the estate, Alessandro implemented a general modernisation of the traditional company structures and established the new brand Montechiaro ANNO DOMINI 345
